Week 6: Facial Features & Limb Formation Of Your Baby In The Womb

1. Embryo Development at Week 6

By week 6, your baby has grown from an embryo to a fetus. This beautiful transition marks the beginning of big changes in your baby’s physical appearance and overall development. The tiny creature within you, no larger than a pea, now has a beating heart and rapidly developing body systems.

2. Formation of Facial Features

During week 6, the early formation of your baby’s facial features becomes evident, even though they are still in their early stages.

a. Eyes:

The baby’s eye structures begin to form, with dark spots appearing where the eyes will eventually be. Initially, the eyes are on the side of the head at the start, but they will slowly move to the front as the face takes shape.

b. Nose:

The formation of the baby’s nose is also on the way now, starting as two small dents in the nasal region. Over time, these dents will develop to form the characteristic shape of a human nose

c. Mouth and Lips:

During this phase, your baby’s mouth and lips are also taking shape,, with small dents forming showing where the mouth and upper lip will be.

d. Ear Buds:

By the end of week 6, ear buds, which will develop into the baby’s ears, are also becoming visible on the sides of the head.

3. Limb Formation Begins

In week 6, the foundation for your baby’s limbs being is laid down, although they are still in their early stages of development:

a. Upper Limbs:

The upper limbs, which will become the baby’s arms, are beginning to grow as small, paddle-like structures coming out from the sides of the body.

Similarly, the lower limbs, which will become the baby’s legs, are forming as small buds near the area where the hips will be.

4. The Placenta and Its Role

a. Placental Growth:

The placenta is rapidly growing and will continue to do so throughout the first trimester. Its main function is to supply  essential nutrients and oxygen to your baby through the umbilical cord.

The placenta acts as a gate between your bloodstream and your baby’s, helping with the exchange of nutrients, oxygen, and waste products.

5. Taking Care of Yourself and Your Growing Baby
