Tiny Fingers, Tiny Toes: Your Baby's Growing Fast

By week 14 of pregnancy, your baby is growing rapidly and developing more defined features. Their muscles are getting stronger, and their nervous system is beginning to control tiny movements (even though you won’t feel them yet). This week is really important for setting up healthy growth that will continue throughout the second trimester and beyond.

Welcome to week 14 of pregnancy! You’re well into your second trimester now, and those first few weeks of nausea and tiredness are slowly fading. This is also the time when your connection with your baby starts to grow stronger. You may not feel it yet, but tiny movements are beginning.
Every day, your little one is developing at an incredible pace, and your body is supporting this amazing process in ways you might not even notice. Week 14 is a sweet reminder that pregnancy is full of small but amazing milestones, even the ones you don’t see.

Your Baby’s Development at Week 14 of Pregnancy

Your baby is growing so quickly right now! At 14 weeks, your baby is about the size of a peach or a lemon. Imagine something around 3.5 to 4 inches long and weighing just a few grams. That’s your little one moving and developing inside you.

Facial Muscles

Your baby’s face is becoming more expressive. Those facial muscles are starting to move, and they can now squint, frown, or even make little sucking and chewing motions. It’s like they’re practising all their cute expressions before you meet them!

Hair and Lanugo

Soft hair is beginning to grow on their head, and faint eyebrows are starting to show. A fine, fuzzy layer called lanugo is also forming all over their body to help keep them warm. Don’t worry, most of this fuzzy layer will shed before birth as your baby builds up fat.

Body Getting Proportional

Your baby’s neck is more defined, and their head is no longer as large compared to the rest of their body. Their posture is straighter, making them look more like a tiny person.

Internal Organs

The liver is now producing bile, and the kidneys are making urine, which becomes part of the amniotic fluid. Red blood cells are forming in the spleen, a key step in their blood development.

Active Mover

Your baby is quite active with flexible hands and feet making smooth movements. You won’t feel these tiny punches and kicks just yet, but they’re happening!
If you have an ultrasound this week, you might actually see your baby moving around or even sucking their tiny thumb. The doctor will also take a close look at the spine, arms, legs, and organs to check that everything is growing just as it should.

Your Body at Week 14 of Pregnancy

As you enter the second trimester, your body is adjusting to support your growing baby. Many people find this phase more comfortable as some early pregnancy symptoms start to fade.

This is what you might notice around week 14:

A Growing Baby Bump

Your uterus is moving up from the pelvic area into your lower abdomen, and you may start to show a small bump. Don’t stress if it’s not too visible yet as every body is different. Factors like your body type or whether this is your first pregnancy can affect when your bump appears.

Less Morning Sickness

If nausea ruled your first trimester, here’s some good news: it often starts to fade now. Many people find they can finally enjoy food again.

Increased Appetite

Your body is working hard, and you might feel hungrier. You need roughly 300 to 350 more calories each day to support your baby’s growth and all the changes happening inside, like your expanding uterus and growing breasts.

Round Ligament Pain

As your uterus expands, the ligaments supporting it stretch too. This can cause sharp or achy pains in your lower belly, especially when you move quickly, cough, or sneeze. Try to rest, move slowly, or relax in a warm bath.

Bleeding Gums

Hormones can make your gums more sensitive and prone to bleeding, a condition called pregnancy gingivitis. It’s quite common and about half of pregnant individuals notice it. Keep brushing twice a day to maintain good oral health.

Nasal Congestion or Nosebleeds

You might notice a stuffy nose or even mild nosebleeds. This happens because of increased blood flow and hormonal changes. Drinking plenty of water and using a humidifier can bring some relief.

Skin Changes

You might notice darkening of the skin around your nipples or a line down the middle of your belly (linea nigra). Stretch marks might also start showing up on your stomach, thighs, or hips as your skin stretches.

Can You Feel Your Baby Move in Week 14 of Pregnancy?

At 14 weeks, it’s still a little early for most first-time parents to feel their baby move. These first little flutters are called quickening, and they usually show up a bit later. Some people who’ve been pregnant before might notice faint movements around this time. But for most, it happens between 18 and 22 weeks.

At 14 weeks of pregnancy, you’ve officially entered the “honeymoon phase.” This is a time when many parents start to feel a little more like themselves again. You’re doing great, and before long, you’ll be feeling those first little kicks!
