According to Dr Moumita Misra, Head – Lab Operations (Mumbai), Metropolis Healthcare Limited, “Breastfeeding increases a mother's nutritional demands, making adequate vitamin and mineral levels essential for both maternal health and optimal infant nutrition.”

Some nutrients deserve particular attention during the breastfeeding period, including:

How Are Nutrient Deficiencies Diagnosed?

Symptoms such as persistent fatigue, weakness or other changes may have several possible causes after childbirth, so testing should be guided by a healthcare professional.

Depending on a woman’s history and clinical assessment, investigations may include:

  • Complete blood count (CBC) to assess blood cell counts and anaemia
  • Serum ferritin to assess iron stores
  • Vitamin B12 and folate testing
  • 25-hydroxy vitamin D testing
  • Thyroid profile when clinically indicated
For iron deficiency, ferritin is an important measure of iron stores, although inflammation can affect its interpretation.

Dr Misra advises that laboratory testing can provide a clearer picture of nutritional status and help healthcare professionals decide whether supplementation or further evaluation is appropriate.

Detecting a deficiency allows treatment to be tailored to the individual rather than relying on unnecessary supplementation. For example, vitamin B12 status can sometimes require additional testing when blood levels are borderline.
