What Is an LH Surge?

Luteinising hormone (LH) is one of the hormones that helps regulate ovulation. As an egg matures, LH levels rise sharply, signalling the ovary that it is time to release the egg. This rise is known as the LH surge. Ovulation often follows within about 24-36 hours, although the timing can vary.


Can You Have Two LH Surges in One Cycle?

Does Two LH Surges Mean You Will Release Two Eggs?

Two LH rises do not necessarily mean that two eggs will be released. An LH surge signals that ovulation may be approaching, but it does not confirm that an egg has actually been released. Multiple eggs may be released during one ovulation event, but an ovulation test alone cannot confirm this.

How Can You Tell Which LH Surge Led to Ovulation?

  • Follow your doctor’s advice if taking fertility medicines

When Should You Talk to a Doctor?

It may be helpful to speak with a doctor if you:

  • Get repeated positive LH tests for several days or in different parts of the same cycle
  • Have very irregular periods, making it difficult to predict your fertile window
  • Are unable to confirm ovulation despite using ovulation tests regularly
  • Have been trying to conceive and are finding it difficult to identify your fertile days
  • Have signs that may suggest PCOS or another hormonal imbalance

LH patterns can vary from one cycle to the next, so seeing more than one rise does not necessarily mean something is wrong.
