Is Mayonnaise Safe to Consume During Pregnancy? What A Doctor Wants You To Know

Mayonnaise can usually be eaten during pregnancy, but its safety depends on how it is made and stored. Commercial mayonnaise made with pasteurised eggs is generally a safer choice, while homemade mayonnaise containing raw eggs may carry a Salmonella risk. Proper refrigeration, food hygiene and checking product labels are equally important during pregnancy.

Pregnancy often brings questions about everyday foods, particularly those containing eggs. Mayonnaise is one such food: while the condiment itself is not inherently unsafe, raw or inadequately treated eggs can increase the risk of foodborne infection. We spoke to Dr Sunita Lamba, Director - Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Vikaspuri, New Delhi, to understand better.

Is Mayonnaise Safe During Pregnancy?

For most pregnant women, mayonnaise made with pasteurised eggs can be consumed safely when stored according to the manufacturer's instructions.

According to the NHS, certain foods containing raw eggs require caution during pregnancy because of Salmonella.

However, not every mayonnaise product is made in the same way. Check the packaging for information about the eggs used, particularly with imported, speciality or freshly prepared products.

Can You Eat Homemade Mayonnaise During Pregnancy?

Homemade mayonnaise deserves greater caution because traditional recipes may contain raw eggs. The FDA recommends using pasteurised eggs or pasteurised egg products in recipes containing raw or undercooked eggs.

Dr Lamba advises, “It is safer to avoid homemade mayonnaise unless you know that pasteurised eggs have been used.”

The NHS also notes that mayonnaise containing raw eggs can be eaten when made with British Lion or Laid in Britain eggs, which have a lower Salmonella risk.

How Should Mayonnaise Be Stored During Pregnancy?

Safe preparation does not replace proper storage. Keep mayonnaise refrigerated according to the instructions on the packaging, observe the use-by date and avoid products that have been left at room temperature for extended periods.

Dr Lamba explains, “Food storage is equally important. Keep mayonnaise refrigerated and follow the storage instructions on the packaging.”

Mayonnaise-based sandwiches and salads bought outside the home also warrant attention. Choose food from reputable establishments where preparation, hygiene and refrigeration can be trusted.

Mayonnaise does not need to be completely avoided during pregnancy. Choosing products made with pasteurised eggs, avoiding mayonnaise containing uncertain raw eggs and following proper storage practices can help make eating mayonnaise during pregnancy a safer choice.
