Having a pet during pregnancy is generally safe, and there is no need to stop enjoying their companionship. However, sensible precautions can reduce infection risks, particularly toxoplasmosis from cat faeces. Good hygiene, safe litter handling and a comfortable sleeping arrangement can help pregnant women continue living safely with their pets.

While pregnancy does not mean giving up contact with animals, certain infections and practical concerns deserve attention. Is It Safe to Sleep With a Pet During Pregnancy?

There is no general recommendation that pregnant women must stop keeping pets or sharing a bed with them. The ACOG states that having a pet during pregnancy is safe, provided appropriate precautions are taken.

The bigger consideration is hygiene rather than simply being around an animal. Pets can carry dirt, parasites or allergens, while a larger or restless pet sharing the bed may interfere with sleep or accidentally bump against the abdomen.



What Precautions Should Pregnant Women Take?

Toxoplasmosis is the main infection-related concern with cats. According to the NHS, cat faeces can contain Toxoplasma, which can harm an unborn baby if infection occurs during pregnancy.

Dr Bhalla advises, “If you have a cat, ideally ask someone else to clean the litter box.”

If that is not possible:

  • Wear disposable gloves when cleaning the litter tray.
  • Wash hands thoroughly afterwards.
  • Clean the litter tray daily.
The CDC also recommends keeping cats indoors where possible and feeding them commercial food rather than raw meat.


Should Pets Sleep Separately During Pregnancy?

Sharing a bed is not automatically unsafe, but comfort matters. As pregnancy progresses, a separate sleeping space may be preferable if a pet disrupts sleep, occupies too much room or moves unpredictably during the night.

Dr Bhalla explains, “You can continue enjoying the companionship of your pet during pregnancy—just maintain good hygiene and take sensible precautions.”

Sleeping with a pet during pregnancy is not generally prohibited, but hygiene and comfort should guide the decision. Avoiding cat faeces, maintaining good hand hygiene and creating a separate sleeping arrangement when necessary can allow pregnant women to enjoy their pets while reducing avoidable risks.
