Babies see colour at birth, but their colour vision is not as developed as an adult’s. Newborns can detect light and dark and see some colours, but they are better at noticing high-contrast patterns than subtle colour differences. Their vision is also blurry, and they see best at close range, usually around 20–30 cm from their face, roughly the distance between a baby's face and a parent's face during feeding.

What Colours Can Newborns See in the First Weeks?

Contrary to popular belief, newborns don't see the world in black and white; colour vision is still in development. Right from the moment they are born, babies can perceive high-contrast shapes and, depending on their sensitivity, may detect a few strong colours, mainly red.

Newborns have limited colour discrimination; they may not distinguish colours as clearly as adults. Colours that stand out in strong contrast to their surroundings are easier for them to notice. Their visual system is still developing, which means their response to colours changes during the early weeks and months.

As colour vision develops, babies become better at noticing differences between colours. By around 2–3 months, many babies show increasing interest in colourful objects and can track objects more effectively. By about 5 months, colour vision is generally well developed.


When Do Babies Start Seeing Colours Properly?

According to the American Optometric Association, colour vision develops in stages rather than all at once.

  • 1 month: Babies begin to focus briefly on faces and prefer high-contrast black-and-white patterns or bright red objects.
  • 2 to 3 months: Eye coordination improves, and babies can track a moving object and start noticing primary colours such as red and green.
  • 4 to 5 months: Colour vision becomes more developed. Babies can see a broader range of colours and also begin judging depth.
  • 6 to 7 months: Most babies see colours much like adults do, distinguishing subtle shades and recognising patterns.
A study has shown that colour vision of most infants at 4 to 6 months is practically the same as that of a colour-perceiving adult.

Why Is a Newborn's Colour Vision Limited?

Colour vision depends on cone cells in the retina, which detect colour, and on the optic nerve pathways that carry this information to the brain. At birth, these structures are not fully developed. The retina continues to mature over the following months, and the connections between the eyes and the visual centres of the brain strengthen with repeated visual stimulation.

As Dr. Rajvanshi puts it: "What they lack is the ability to distinguish a full range of colours, as it is due not only to underdeveloped cone cells in the retina but also to immature neural pathways that help a person to process different colours."

How Can Parents Help a Baby's Vision Develop?

Parents do not need expensive toys or special exercises to support normal visual development. Everyday interaction provides plenty of visual stimulation.

Try:

  • Holding your face close to your baby's face during feeding and talking.
  • Using toys, books and objects with strong contrasts during the early months.
  • Slowly moving an interesting object from side to side once your baby begins tracking.
  • Providing age-appropriate colourful books and toys as colour vision develops.
  • Giving your baby opportunities to look at faces and objects from a comfortable distance.
  • Limit direct exposure to bright sunlight or strong tube lights, as newborn eyes are light-sensitive in the first weeks.

When Should You Worry About Your Baby's Eyesight?

Dr Rajvanshi recommends that a visit to a paediatrician or paediatric ophthalmologist should be considered if a baby:

  • Does not track moving objects by 3 months
  • Does not make eye contact by 2 to 3 months
  • Has eyes that constantly cross or wander after 3 months
  • Has one eye constantly turning in or out
  • Has persistent difficulty focusing or following objects
  • Shows any noticeable difference between the two eyes
  • Shows white or cloudy reflections in the pupil in photographs
Early detection of eye conditions, such as congenital cataracts or retinal disorders, leads to better treatment outcomes. Babies born prematurely may also require specific eye screening, including screening for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), depending on their gestational age, birth weight and clinical circumstances.

A newborn's limited colour vision gradually sharpens over the first six months, and this steady progression is a normal, healthy part of visual development.
