Is a Brazilian Wax Safe During Pregnancy? What a Doctor Says

A Brazilian wax is generally considered safe during pregnancy when done hygienically by a trained professional. However, hormonal changes, increased blood flow and sensitive skin can make waxing more painful than usual. Pregnant women should avoid waxing over rashes, cuts, infections or varicose veins and consult a doctor if unsure.

can you get a brazilian wax during pregnancy?
Personal grooming during pregnancy is a matter of comfort and choice. Some women prefer waxing, while others switch to trimming or shaving as the bump grows. If you are considering a Brazilian wax, the main concerns are not harm to the baby, but skin sensitivity, hygiene, pain and infection prevention.

Is A Brazilian Wax Safe During Pregnancy?

We consulted with Dr Nivedita Singh, Senior Consultant – Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Jalandhar, and she said, “Yes, a Brazilian wax is generally considered safe during pregnancy. There is no evidence to suggest that waxing harms the baby or increases the risk of pregnancy complications.”

Why Waxing May Feel Different During Pregnancy

Pregnancy can make skin more reactive. According to ACOG, changes to skin, hair and nails are common during pregnancy and are often linked to hormonal shifts.

Increased blood flow may also cause more tenderness, redness, swelling or irritation after waxing, especially in the bikini area.

Precautions To Take Before Booking A Brazilian Wax

“To reduce discomfort, it is advisable to visit a reputable salon that follows strict hygiene practices and uses clean, high-quality wax products,” advises Dr Singh.

Before your appointment:

  • Choose a well-trained therapist and a hygienic salon.
  • Do not try Brazilian waxing for the first time during pregnancy.
  • Avoid experimenting with new waxes, strong fragrances or harsh chemicals.
  • Do mild exfoliation before the procedure if your skin is healthy.
  • Stay hydrated and schedule it when you are well-rested.
  • Avoid waxing in the week before your scheduled delivery.

When Should You Avoid Waxing?

Avoid Brazilian waxing if you have:

  • Cuts, rashes, eczema or skin infections
  • Painful irritation or ingrown hairs
  • Varicose veins in the area
  • A high-risk pregnancy unless your doctor approves
  • Recent allergic reaction to wax products
As per a study on dermatoses after parlour procedures, post-waxing folliculitis was among the common skin problems seen after cosmetic procedures, showing why hygiene and aftercare matter.

Aftercare Tips

Wear loose cotton clothing after waxing. Apply coconut oil or a gentle moisturiser if your skin tolerates it. Avoid heat, friction, tight underwear, perfumed products and scratching for at least 24 hours.

A Brazilian wax can be safe for most pregnant women when done carefully. Speak to your doctor if you have skin concerns or a high-risk pregnancy.
