Can You Use a Sauna or Steam Bath During Pregnancy?

It is generally advisable to avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and other activities that can significantly raise your body temperature during pregnancy. Overheating may cause dehydration, dizziness, or fainting. Significant hyperthermia, particularly during early pregnancy, may also carry risks for the developing baby. Our experts explain the adverse effects.

Pregatips
Pregnancy can affect how your body responds to heat. Spending time in a sauna or steam room can raise your body temperature, particularly with prolonged exposure. We spoke to Dr Vinatha Puli, Senior Consultant – Gynaecologist & Obstetrician – at the Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Hyderabad. She advises avoiding activities that can significantly raise your body temperature during pregnancy.
Dr Vinatha explains that overheating may cause dehydration, dizziness or fainting. She also highlights that a significant increase in core body temperature may be a concern, particularly during early pregnancy.

Why Should You Avoid Saunas and Steam Rooms During Pregnancy?

The following are the reasons why you should avoid saunas and steam rooms during pregnancy:

They Can Cause Overheating

Saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs expose you to high temperatures that can make it difficult for your body to maintain a normal temperature. According to Dr Vinatha, saunas and hot tubs can raise your body temperature quickly. Significant hyperthermia can be concerning during early pregnancy, particularly when the rise in temperature is prolonged.

Steam Rooms Can Make Cooling Difficult

Steam rooms combine high temperature with high humidity. Dr Vinatha explains that this can make it more difficult for your body to cool itself through sweating. As a result, you may become overheated.

You May Become Dehydrated or Dizzy

Heat exposure can contribute to fluid loss. You may feel weak, dizzy, nauseous, or faint if you become overheated. If you experience these symptoms, leave the hot environment immediately and move somewhere cooler.

What Can You Do Instead?

You do not need to avoid warmth completely during pregnancy. Dr Vinatha recommends choosing a comfortably warm shower or bath instead of a sauna, steam room, or hot tub.

You can also:

  • Avoid excessively hot water
  • Stay well hydrated
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to heat
  • Leave the environment if you feel unusually hot, weak, dizzy, or nauseous
  • Ask your obstetrician before trying heat-based wellness treatments
Experts also advise limiting sauna and hot-tub use during pregnancy because of the potential for hyperthermia.

What If You Accidentally Used a Sauna or Steam Room?

If you used a sauna or steam room before realising you were pregnant, do not panic. Dr Vinatha advises moving to a cooler environment and drinking fluids. You should inform your doctor, particularly if you experience significant overheating or fainting.

An accidental exposure does not automatically mean that your baby has been harmed. The concern is mainly related to significant increases in body temperature, particularly during early pregnancy. Your obstetrician can assess your circumstances and advise whether any additional monitoring is needed.

When Should You Contact Your Doctor?

Contact your doctor if you develop significant symptoms after heat exposure, such as:

  • Fainting
  • Persistent dizziness or weakness
  • Severe nausea
  • Significant overheating
  • Difficulty recovering after leaving the hot environment
Seek urgent medical attention if you develop severe symptoms such as confusion, loss of consciousness, or severe weakness, which may indicate serious heat-related illness. It is generally recommended to avoid saunas because they can significantly increase your body temperature. If you are unsure about a heat-based activity, ask your obstetrician first.
