Is Tulsi Tea Safe During Pregnancy? Risks Expecting Mothers Should Know About

Tulsi tea is commonly used for immunity and cold relief, but regular consumption during pregnancy needs caution. Small culinary amounts of tulsi leaves may be acceptable for many women, but concentrated tulsi tea, extracts or supplements should be avoided unless approved by an obstetrician. We explain with inputs from a doctor.

Can pregnant women drink tulsi tea?
Tulsi, or holy basil, is deeply valued in Indian homes and traditional medicine. Many people drink tulsi tea for cough, sore throat or seasonal illness. During pregnancy, however, even familiar herbal drinks should be checked carefully because natural ingredients can still have active effects on the body. We consulted a doctor to understand this better.

Is Tulsi Tea Safe During Pregnancy?

Here's what the doctor said.

While occasional use of tulsi leaves in small culinary amounts is generally considered safe, there is limited scientific evidence to confirm the safety of regularly drinking tulsi tea during pregnancy.Dr Sukirti Jain, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Navi Mumbai

This distinction is important. A few leaves used in food are not the same as daily herbal tea, extracts or supplements. Herbal products are considered dietary supplements, and many have not been well studied in pregnancy, so each ingredient should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

Why Caution Is Needed When Consuming Tulsi Tea

Herbs contain biologically active compounds, and concentrated forms may act differently from food-level use.

Some laboratory and animal studies have suggested that concentrated tulsi extracts may influence hormone levels or uterine activity, although these findings have not been conclusively demonstrated in humans.Dr Sukirti Jain, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Navi Mumbai

This does not mean one accidental cup is likely to harm you. It means routine use should not be assumed safe.

As per the American Pregnancy Association, not all herbs are safe during pregnancy, and herbal preparations can vary in strength and purity.

What If You Have Cold Or Cough?

Many pregnant women reach for tulsi tea when they have a sore throat. Dr Jain advises, “Pregnant women experiencing cough, sore throat, or seasonal illnesses should avoid self-medicating with herbal teas and instead seek medical advice for pregnancy-safe remedies.”

Safer supportive measures may include:

  • Plain warm water
  • Warm soups
  • Steam inhalation if advised
  • Adequate rest
  • Medicines only after doctor approval

When Should You Avoid Tulsi Tea?

Avoid routine tulsi tea if you are in the first trimester, have a high-risk pregnancy, bleeding, cramping, a previous miscarriage, thyroid or hormonal concerns, or are taking medicines that may interact with herbs.

Natural’ does not always mean ‘safe’ during pregnancy. Herbal products may contain biologically active compounds that affect the body differently during this sensitive period.Dr Sukirti Jain, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Navi Mumbai

Occasional tulsi in food is different from regularly drinking tulsi tea. Since pregnancy safety evidence is limited, avoid routine tulsi tea or supplements unless your obstetrician approves them. If you have already had an occasional cup, do not panic, but discuss continued use with your doctor.
