Why Muskmelon Can Be Good In Pregnancy
Muskmelon is rich in water and provides useful pregnancy nutrients. When we asked Dr Neha Jain, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Fortis La Femme, if pregnant women can eat muskmelon, she said, “Yes, you can eat muskmelon, or kharbuja, during pregnancy, and it is actually great for you. There is no evidence it causes harm when handled safely.”According to ACOG, fruits and vegetables are important during pregnancy because they provide fibre, vitamins and minerals that support maternal and foetal health.
Muskmelon is about 90% water, so it helps with hydration and constipation. You will also get vitamin C, vitamin A or beta-carotene, potassium and folate.
These nutrients may help in simple ways:
- Hydration: Helpful during summer and hot weather.
- Digestion: Fibre may support bowel movement.
- Immunity: Vitamin C supports general immune function.
- Foetal Development: Folate supports early neural tube development, while vitamin A supports normal growth when taken through food sources.
What Should You Watch For?
The biggest precaution is hygiene. As per the CDC, pregnant women are more likely to get sick from foodborne germs such as Listeria, and unwashed muskmelon or kharbuja can be risky. The netted skin can harbour Listeria or Salmonella. Scrub the rind under running water before cutting, so bacteria do not transfer to the flesh.
Be careful about:
- Pre-Cut Melon: Avoid melon that has been sitting out.
- Storage: Once cut, refrigerate and eat within 1–2 days.
- Blood Sugar: If you have gestational diabetes, limit to 1 cup and pair with protein such as cottage cheese or nuts.
- Allergy: Avoid it if you react to melon or ragweed pollen.
Muskmelon can be a safe, hydrating and nutrient-rich pregnancy fruit when washed, cut and stored properly.
For most pregnant women, 1 cup of diced muskmelon, 3–5 times a week, is reasonable. If you have gestational diabetes, allergies or a high-risk pregnancy, ask your doctor for personalised guidance.
