When Can You Hear a Baby’s Heartbeat for the First Time, During Pregnancy?

Hearing or seeing a baby’s heartbeat is an emotional pregnancy milestone, but the timing depends on gestational age and the method used. Early ultrasound can identify cardiac activity before a handheld Doppler can reliably detect it. If cardiac activity is not detected at an early appointment, further assessment may be needed.

When can you hear the baby's heartbeat during pregnancy?
For many expectant parents, the first glimpse or sound of the baby’s heartbeat can make pregnancy feel more real. However, there is no single point at which every pregnancy will have a detectable heartbeat, as the timing can vary with gestational age, pregnancy dating and the method of assessment.
According to Dr Sadhna Singhal Vishnoi, Associate Director – Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Punjabi Bagh, New Delhi, “With an ultrasound, cardiac activity can often be seen from around 6 weeks of pregnancy, although it may be earlier or later depending on how the pregnancy is developing and how accurately the pregnancy has been dated.”

When Can an Ultrasound Detect the Babys Heartbeat?

Early ultrasound can detect cardiac activity during the first trimester. The NHS notes that a heartbeat can sometimes be picked up by a vaginal ultrasound around six weeks, although this may not be offered routinely at that stage.

Accurate pregnancy dating also matters. ACOG considers first-trimester ultrasound measurement the most accurate method for establishing or confirming gestational age.

Dr Vishnoi explains, “It is also important to understand that an early ultrasound may show cardiac activity even though you cannot physically ‘hear’ the heartbeat.”

When Can a Doppler Detect the Heartbeat?

A handheld Doppler uses sound waves to detect fetal heart activity. The exact timing can vary, and detection may be more difficult earlier in pregnancy.

Dr Vishnoi says, “Every pregnancy progresses differently. Your doctor will assess the heartbeat along with the baby’s growth, gestational age and other ultrasound findings.”

What If the Heartbeat Cannot Be Detected?

An absent heartbeat at an early examination does not always mean pregnancy loss. ACOG notes that cardiac activity may simply be too early to detect, and further ultrasound or other assessment may sometimes be required.

Dr Vishnoi advises, “If your doctor cannot detect a heartbeat during an early visit, do not panic. It may simply be too early, or your dates may be slightly different from what you expected.”

The timing of the baby’s heartbeat depends on pregnancy dating and the method used for detection. An early scan provides important information about pregnancy development, while heartbeat detection should always be interpreted alongside other clinical findings rather than viewed in isolation.
