Sleeping on stomach during pregnancy: safe or not?
Sleep positions can become a surprisingly common concern during pregnancy. As the abdomen grows, many women wonder whether lying on their stomach could put pressure on the baby or whether they should immediately change to sleeping on their side.
The good news is that stomach sleeping is generally fine while it remains comfortable, particularly earlier in pregnancy. We spoke to Dr Monica Agarwal, Senior Consultant – Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Chandigarh to understand better.

According to the doctor, “Stomach sleeping is generally fine when it is comfortable, particularly early in pregnancy.”

There is no need to worry that lying on your stomach early in pregnancy will “squash” the baby. As pregnancy progresses, however, the expanding abdomen usually makes stomach sleeping uncomfortable, so most women naturally move towards another position.

Dr Agarwal explains, “As your belly grows, sleeping on your stomach naturally becomes increasingly uncomfortable and often impractical.”

When Should You Switch to Side Sleeping?

As pregnancy advances, side sleeping is generally preferred. The NHS recommends going to sleep on your side after 28 weeks because research has linked falling asleep on your back at this stage with a higher risk of stillbirth.

Importantly, you do not have to sleep exclusively on your left side. Both sides are acceptable. Dr Agarwal advises women to prioritise a comfortable side position rather than becoming anxious about maintaining one perfect sleeping posture throughout the night.

How Can You Make Side Sleeping More Comfortable?

Simple adjustments can help support your changing body:

  • Place a pillow between your knees.
  • Use another pillow beneath your abdomen for additional support.
  • Consider a full-length pregnancy pillow if it feels more comfortable.
If you wake up on your back later in pregnancy, there is no need to panic. Simply turn onto your side and settle back down, as advised by the NHS.

Sleeping on your stomach during pregnancy is generally acceptable while it remains comfortable, particularly during early pregnancy. As the bump grows, switching naturally to side sleeping is usually more practical. Dr Agarwal advises women to listen to their bodies and follow personalised guidance from their obstetrician when medical or pregnancy-related concerns require a specific sleeping position.
