Jeera, or cumin, is a staple spice in Indian kitchens and is commonly added to dals, curries, chaas and rice dishes. Many pregnant women also drink jeera water for digestion. While cumin used in cooking is generally acceptable, jeera water should be treated as an occasional supportive drink rather than a daily medicinal remedy.

Is Jeera Water Safe During Pregnancy?

We spoke to a doctor to understand better.

Jeera is a commonly used spice in Indian kitchens and, when consumed in moderate culinary amounts, is generally considered safe during pregnancy.Dr Pooja C Thukral, Associate Director - Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Faridabad

The keyword is moderation. According to ACOG, eating well during pregnancy means choosing a balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein foods, dairy and healthy fats. Jeera can be part of such a diet, but it cannot replace proper nutrition.

Why Do Pregnant Women Drink Jeera Water?

Dr Thukral notes that “jeera water, prepared by soaking or boiling cumin seeds in water, is often recommended as a traditional home remedy for improving digestion.”

Pregnancy hormones can slow digestion, causing bloating, gas and constipation. As per ACOG, digestive problems such as constipation, acid reflux and haemorrhoids are common in pregnancy and may need lifestyle changes or medical care if persistent.

Benefits of Jeera Paani

Possible benefits of occasional jeera water include:

  • Digestive Comfort: It may help with mild bloating, indigestion and gas.
  • Hydration Support: Dr Thukral says it may support hydration “particularly when consumed without added sugar or excessive spices.”
  • Plant Compounds: Cumin contains antioxidants and bioactive compounds.

Why Excess Intake Is Not Recommended

Dr Thukral cautioned against excess intake of jeera paani, saying, “There is limited scientific evidence supporting the routine daily consumption of concentrated jeera water specifically during pregnancy.”

She further advises that pregnant women should avoid “excessive amounts or concentrated cumin supplements without medical advice.” This is especially important for women with high-risk pregnancies, recurrent miscarriages, low blood pressure or pregnancy complications.

As per some reports, herbal products and supplements are not the same as medicines and may not be well studied in pregnancy.

Jeera in cooking is generally safe, and occasional mild jeera water may help digestion for some pregnant women. However, do not make concentrated jeera water or cumin supplements a daily habit without medical advice. Plain water, balanced meals and regular prenatal care remain the safest foundation.
