We reached out to Dr Sunitha Reddy G, Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, SPARSH Hospital, for this purpose.
Why Do New Parents Feel More Irritable?
As mentioned by Dr Reddy, being a new parent is a very happy experience, but it comes with many issues such as lack of sleep, hormonal changes, physical healing, and constant responsibility. It is natural for you to feel irritable or have no patience at times, and it doesn’t make you a bad parent. In other words, many factors are working at once on your body and mind; you heal physically, undergo hormonal changes, and do so with less sleep than normal, while taking care of a totally dependent baby.
Understanding Your Triggers
According to Dr Reddy, understanding your triggers is the first step to controlling anger. Some triggers of frustration include hunger, fatigue, unachievable goals, and a lack of time for oneself. As you start to understand this, you will realise that your anger isn't as unpredictable as it might seem at first. Not eating, having a sleepless night, or comparing yourself to an ideal parent could be some of the things that have been building up before you get triggered by something.
What to Do Right Then
In case of high emotions, Dr Reddy suggests placing the baby in their crib and taking a couple of minutes to relax before dealing with the situation. Just this tiny step could make a huge difference, allowing the nervous system to calm down before addressing your baby, your partner, or any other people. Here are some ways to deal with the situation:
- Move into another room for a minute if your baby is safely in the crib
- Take several deep breaths before reacting
- Understand that you are just experiencing a temporary state that is going to pass soon
- Contact your partner or another person who can help right then
Creating a Support Network
Reach out to your partner, family members, or close friends for assistance. Delegating tasks lets you have some time off. Uninterrupted sleep, even in small portions, can greatly benefit emotional balance. It is not always easy to ask for help because you may feel pressured to do things on your own. However, receiving it, be it your babysitting for one hour while you take a nap or just someone to listen to you, makes the most difference in the end.
Everyday Stress-Relief Strategies
Utilise some stress-relieving strategies like deep breathing, taking a brief walk, practising mindfulness, or just venting about your emotions. This will not require a lot of time; even five minutes of walking or deep breathing exercises can do the trick.Do not try to compare yourself with the perfect image of a parent that exists on the internet. What you see on the internet is not the entire truth, and it will only make your life more difficult.
When Should You Contact Your Doctor?
Contact your doctor in case you experience one or more of the following:- Extreme anger
- Uncontrollable or frequent feelings of anger
- Feelings of despair or hopelessness along with your anger
- Thoughts of hurting yourself or your child
- Feeling detached from your child and everyday reality
- Exhaustion that doesn’t seem to go away despite your efforts to rest
Do not forget that being a parent is a learning process. Being gentle to yourself and asking for help is an essential part of nurturing healthy relationships with your child. An occasional loss of temper does not erase all of your love and dedication to raising him or her.
Whether you’re pregnant, a new mom, or navigating postpartum, you don’t have to do it alone. Join our support group to connect, share, and support one another.
